CEOs of Repute

In 1986 Steve Jobs left Apple to try his hand at other things (Pixar, NeXt etc) only to end up back at Apple, saving the day and taking the company to a whole 'nother level.

In 2004 Michael Dell left his computer company for semi-retirement. Only to come back in January and try and revive his old baby.

What drives these men to come back from outer-space and revive a company they had left for dead in the first place?

Does this happen in other industries?

Does this mean that nobody can truly understand and drive these corporations other than the visionary founder?
